The procedure
What is an FUT hair transplant?
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is a surgical hair graft extraction technique that involves removing a strip of skin from the back of the scalp. The strip is divided into individual hair grafts ready for implantation. After the grafts are harvested, the donor area wound is stitched up. Over time, this heals into a narrow linear scar which is hidden beneath longer hair.
The harvested grafts are reimplanted into your thinning areas. Over the next few months, the grafts begin to produce new, permanent hair growth. Density continues to thicken over 12–18 months, leaving you with a fuller, thicker head of hair.
Our FUT surgeons are among the most skilled and experienced in the world. Supported by a team of highly qualified technicians, our clinical teams offer unparalleled support for all FUT patients at Wimpole US.
FUT vs FUE
FUT was the first modern hair transplant technique. It involves removing a strip of skin from the scalp and dissecting it into individual grafts, which can leave a narrow scar. FUE involves extracting each graft one by one using a micropunch, creating virtually no visible scarring. While it’s now less common than FUE, FUT is still a gold standard hair transplant technique — especially for those with Afro hair textures, long hair, or advanced hair loss.

Donor management
Planning your FUT procedure
FUT is the most efficient way to harvest grafts, so it’s ideal for high graft volumes. But donor hair is finite, so donor management is essential. At Wimpole US, we aim to use enough grafts to give you a fantastic result, while accounting for the possibility of future procedures to tackle ongoing native hair loss — so you can aim for fantastic long-term results.

Step by step
The FUT procedure
Understand what to expect from your FUT procedure. Learn what happens at every stage of the strip surgery process.
Step 1
Planning the procedure
You’ll agree on a proposed graft count and hairline design with your surgeon. You’ll also go through the pre-op paperwork to confirm your medical details and details of the procedure.
Step 2
Preparing for surgery
You’ll then be prepared for surgery: your donor zone may be trimmed or shaved, and the surgical team will administer local anesthetic to numb the affected areas.
Step 3
Graft extraction
Using a sharp blade, your surgeon will remove a narrow strip of skin containing the required number of grafts from your donor region. The team dissects this into individual grafts.
Step 4
Incisions & implantation
When the grafts are prepared, the surgeon creates incisions in the recipient area ready for graft placement. The team implants the grafts so they follow your natural hair growth pattern.
Step 5
Discharge & aftercare
Once the surgery is complete, you’ll get a complete aftercare pack to help you recover swiftly. Follow the instructions at home carefully to help your grafts heal smoothly.

Step by step
Why patients choose FUT
Three FUE hairline transformations, before and after. Real results from top US hair transplant surgeons.
High graft volumes
FUT is the most efficient extraction technique. So it’s the optimal technique for those with advanced hair loss who need high graft volumes.
Hidden scarring
FUT leaves a narrow scar in the donor region which is hidden under longer hair, and there’s no need to fully shave your head.
Safe for Afro hair
Afro hair can be prone to graft damage when using FUE. So FUT is often preferred for people with Afro hair textures.
Natural results
FUT leaves you with a natural-looking hairline that suits your age and appearance, and lasts a lifetime.
- Lower risk of graft transection
- No need to fully shave your head
- Textured hair can help hide scarring
FUT for Afro hair textures
FUT, the optimal technique for Afro hair transplants
FUT is often recommended for people with Afro hair textures. The FUT technique is less likely to damage the grafts compared with FUE, making it the optimal technique for those with curly or coiled hair.
Afro hair transplants require a high level of skill and experience to get right. So it’s important to choose the right surgeon with ample experience of performing FUT on curly hair textures.

Compare
FUT vs FUE
Both FUE and FUT are highly effective hair transplant techniques. But each has different use cases, pros and cons. Compare FUE vs FUT below.
| FUT | FUE | |
|---|---|---|
| Harvesting method | Strip surgery removes a strip of skin, which is then cut into individual grafts | Micropunch extracts individual grafts one by one |
| Donor area scarring | Narrow linear scar, visible under short hair but covered by longer hair | Scattered dots, virtually invisible even under short hair |
| Recovery | 7 to 14 days, stitches required | 3 to 5 days, no stitches |
| Best for | Large graft volumes; patients with long hair and/or Afro-textured hair | Small to medium graft volumes; patients with short hair; beard and eyebrow transplants |
| Costs from | $4,799 | $4,799 |

Joe Palmer's FUT Hair Transplant Review
"I was really nervous going into the procedure, but Dr Barron and the team put me completely at ease from the moment I arrived. Dr Barron was my surgeon and was absolutely brilliant throughout. He was professional, reassuring and clearly takes a lot of pride in his work. His calm approach and attention to detail made the whole experience much easier than I expected.
James was in charge of my aftercare and has also been fantastic. He has been extremely helpful, knowledgeable and reassuring with any questions I’ve had since the transplant, which has made the recovery process feel a lot less stressful.
The nursing staff were amazing as well. Everyone was friendly, attentive and professional, and they went out of their way to make sure I felt comfortable throughout the day.
I’m really happy with how everything is looking so far and with the level of care I’ve received before, during and after the procedure.
A massive thank you to Dr Barron, James and the whole nursing team. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience and would happily recommend them to anyone considering a hair transplant."

Suitability
Am I a good candidate for FUT?
If you have pattern hair loss and a healthy supply of donor hair, you’re probably a candidate for FUT. You’ll also need to understand and accept the scarring risk associated with FUT. Your consultant will confirm your suitability for FUT beforehand, including checking your medical history, scalp health, and expectations.
- Stable, established pattern hair loss, not sudden shedding
- Strong donor density at the back and sides of the scalp
- You’re in good overall health, with no active scalp problems
- Realistic expectations about scarring and density

Growth timeline
Your 12-month FUT growth timeline
Most FUT patients see full density from 1 year after their surgery. Learn what to expect over the first 12 months.
Month 1
Initial recovery
The first 2 weeks after FUT are dedicated to rest and recovery. Follow the clinic guidance to support wound healing and keep your stitches safe until they’re removed at the clinic.
Month 2
Shock hair loss
All the scabs and swelling have gone by month 2, but shock hair loss is usually underway. Graft hair shedding can be concerning, but it’s a normal part of recovery.
Month 3
First signs of growth
Around the third month, you’ll begin to see early signs of growth. These emerging hairs are often fine and sparse at first, but they’ll begin to thicken over the next few months.
Months 4–11
Increased density
Growth becomes more noticeable as your FUT hair transplant density builds over time. Continue with any recommended treatments to preserve your native hair.
Months 12–18
Full results
Most FUT patients reach their expected density and coverage at around 12 to 18 months. Your new hairline will be thicker and fuller.

What our patients say
FAQs
FUT FAQs
Here are the questions we’re often asked by patients.
Still have questions? Give us a call or schedule a consultation.
What is FUT hair transplant surgery?
FUT, or follicular unit transplantation, is a hair restoration procedure in which a thin strip of hair-bearing skin is removed from the donor area, usually the back or sides of the scalp. Individual follicular units are then separated and transplanted into areas affected by hair loss. Over a year, these grafts produce permanent hair growth.
Who is a good candidate for FUT?
FUT is usually suitable for those affected by pattern hair loss, especially if it’s extensive or advanced. Good candidates have plenty of donor hair density and realistic expectations about outcomes.
Find out if you’re eligible for FUT when you schedule a consultation with Wimpole US.
Does FUT surgery hurt?
You shouldn’t feel any pain during the surgery itself as your scalp will be numbed with local anesthetic. Some patients report discomfort when the anesthetic is administered.
After the anesthetic wears off you can expect some soreness, tightness, swelling and discomfort. This is normally controlled with acetaminophen and prescription medications provided by the clinic.
How long does FUT surgery take?
FUT surgery normally takes around 4 to 6 hours, but you should expect to be at the clinic all day. The actual duration depends on the number of grafts being transplanted and the complexity of the procedure.
What is recovery like after FUT?
Most FUT patients can get back to their normal activities within 7 to 14 days of their procedure. You should get plenty of rest for the first few days, and avoid any vigorous activity or stretching, as this can interfere with wound healing.
Follow the instructions from the clinic regarding recovery and aftercare to give your FUT surgery the best chance of success. They’ll give you specific advice around hair washing, exercise, sleeping, pain management, and wound care.
Will FUT leave a scar?
Yes. After the strip of skin is removed from the donor area, it will be stitched together, leaving you with a narrow scar. This is normally hidden beneath longer hair, but may be visible under fades or close-cropped hair.
When will transplanted hair start growing?
Many patients see signs of regrowth from around 3 months post-procedure, with full density expected around 12 months after your FUT hair transplant.
Are FUT hair transplant results permanent?
Yes. FUT transplants follicles from the back of the scalp to thinning areas. The follicles at the back of the head are normally highly resistant to pattern hair loss, so they won’t stop producing hair in the same way as the native follicles.
However, it’s possible for native hair loss to continue after an FUT hair transplant. That’s why it’s important to stabilize any ongoing hair loss with medication ahead of your FUT surgery.
What are the risks of FUT surgery?
Potential FUT risks include infection, temporary numbness, changes in scalp sensation, visible scarring, poor graft growth and an unnatural appearance. Most of these risks are very rare, especially if you choose an appropriately qualified and experienced surgeon.
