The procedure

What is an FUE hair transplant?

Follicular Unit Extraction — or FUE — is the most common method of hair transplantation in the US and worldwide. It involves extracting donor grafts one by one, leaving a small extraction wound in the donor area. These wounds heal rapidly, with no need for stitches. So FUE patients are left with virtually no visible scarring, giving you the freedom to style your hair however you like.

Grafts are then placed in incisions in your thinning areas. After a few months, these grafts start to produce new, permanent growth that blends with the surrounding hair. Within 12 to 18 months, you’ll have a fuller, thicker head of hair.

Wimpole US clinicians support you to get the best possible results from your FUE procedure. From strategic hairline planning to unrivaled aftercare support, we’re here to optimize your hairline for years to come.

FUE vs FUT

FUE is more common than FUT, as it leaves less visible scarring and recovery can be quicker. The key difference is in how the grafts are extracted. FUE involves individual graft extraction using a micropunch tool. FUT involves removing a strip of skin from the donor area, which is then divided into individual grafts. The strip is stitched up, leaving a narrow linear scar.

Donor management

Planning your FUE procedure

Hair transplant donor hair is a finite resource. So it’s essential to choose a clinic that takes donor hair management seriously.

At Wimpole US, we take a conservative approach that maximizes the use of your available donor hair, while taking into account the potential for future native hair loss. This approach means your hair restoration results can last a lifetime.

Discuss your graft plan

Step by step

The FUE procedure

Discover the full FUE process from start to finish, so you know exactly what to expect.

Step 1

Planning the procedure

Your surgeon will confirm your estimated graft count and design your hairline with your input and agreement. They’ll also check your medical details and run through what to expect.

Step 2

Preparing for surgery

With the paperwork complete, you’ll get ready for surgery. This may involve shaving or trimming your hair. Your donor and recipient areas will be numbed using local anesthetic.

Step 3

Graft extraction

A micropunch is used to extract hair grafts from the donor area one by one. Each extracted graft leaves a small circular hole <1 mm in diameter. Grafts are held in a special solution.

Step 4

Incisions & implantation

Your surgeon will create incisions in the recipient area. The surgical team will then implant the grafts carefully, ensuring they follow the natural growth pattern of your hair.

Step 5

Discharge & aftercare

When the surgery is complete, the team will provide you with a comprehensive aftercare pack to promote swift healing. Follow the instructions at home to help your grafts heal well.

Why patients choose FUE

From scarring to recovery, explore why so many patients opt for FUE hair transplants.

No visible scar

FUE extraction means there’s no stitches or large wounds. Each micro wound heals quickly, leaving tiny scars that are invisible even under cropped hair.

Fast recovery

FUE patients tend to recover quickly, with most signs of surgery gone within 2 weeks. Some patients return to work within 5 days.

Unshaven options

You don’t always need to fully shave your head to have FUE. Unshaven FUE helps you keep your hair transplant under wraps during recovery.

Natural results

FUE offers exceptionally natural-looking results for scalp, beard, eyebrow, and body hair restoration, thanks to its advanced technique and lack of visible scarring.

Unshaven FUE

FUE hair transplants, without shaving your head

Standard FUE requires shaving your head to make it easier to perform the surgery. But elite surgeons — like those at Wimpole US — have the skill required to perform FUE even if your head is left unshaved.

Unshaven FUE involves placing grafts between and around existing hairs, making it much easier to hide the traces of hair transplant surgery during recovery.

Many FUE candidates are suitable for unshaven FUE, but not all. It depends on your donor density, graft numbers, and other procedure complexities. Your surgeon can tell you if you’re a candidate for unshaven FUE at your consultation.

Dan's FUE Hair Transplant Review

Absolutely incredible experience! A hair transplant is something I've been thinking about for a long time now and finally going for it made me really nervous, however the level of care and most importantly understanding showed by Wimpole Clinic from my first consultation to my procedure was outstanding.

What was so lovely about Wimpole Clinic was that I felt like I was in safe hands, everything is well explained and any questions or concerns I had were handled in a professional manner, Marie in particular has been fantastic, she's been with me from the beginning advising me and answering any questions I may have had post surgery making this experience as comfortable as possible and keeping me calm when I've had my own concerns, I think she's been phenomenal and is still advising and helping me 4 weeks on.

I can't recommend Wimpole high enough, I think everyone there from the reception staff to the surgeons and consultants deserve the highest praise and I'm very grateful for everything they've done to help give me something that has improved my confidence in myself and my appearance.

Suitability

Am I a good candidate for FUE?

Most people with pattern hair loss and healthy donor density are suitable for FUE surgery. Your consultant will check you have enough donor hair to achieve your desired results, and that you have realistic expectations of the outcome. They’ll also review your medical history and scalp health to check if you’re a good candidate for FUE.

  • Stable, established pattern hair loss, not sudden shedding
  • Enough donor density at the back and sides of the scalp
  • In good overall health, with any scalp conditions treated first
  • Realistic expectations about coverage and timeline

Growth timeline

Your 12-month FUE growth timeline

Full density after FUE is normally visible from 12 months post-procedure. Here’s what to expect over the first year, from recovery to restoration.

Month 1

Initial recovery

The first 2 weeks after FUE are critical. Expect swelling and scabbing, and get plenty of rest. Follow your aftercare instructions closely to ensure swift, safe recovery.

Month 2

Shock hair loss

Your scalp looks normal, but grafts may start to shed. Shock hair loss often starts around 2 to 4 weeks post-procedure. This can be alarming, but it’s totally normal.

Month 3

First signs of growth

The first signs of growth normally start appearing around month 3. Hair can appear a little thin and sparse at this stage, but you should notice promising signs of future density.

Months 4–11

Increased density

Hair starts to thicken and fill out, making your hairline look fuller and more natural. Medical therapies can help stabilize native hair loss.

Months 12–18

Full results

After a year you should see your full and final result, with enhanced density and thickness across the scalp. In some cases, it can take up to 18 months to see full density.

FAQs

FUE FAQs

Here are the questions we’re often asked by patients.

Wimpole Clinic, established 1975 — awards

Am I a good candidate for FUE?

Most FUE candidates are those affected by male or female pattern baldness. If you have another type of alopecia, you might not be eligible for an FUE hair transplant.

Additionally, if you’re in the early stages of hair loss, your surgeon may advise you to try non-surgical interventions first. This can help slow, stop, or even reverse your hair loss, meaning you may be able to avoid or postpone surgery altogether.

FUE costs at the Wimpole Clinic start at $4,799. Get a tailored quote for your specific procedure when you book a consultation at the Wimpole Clinic in New York or Miami.

FUT is the most common alternative to FUE. It’s the only other modern hair transplant technique that’s still widely used today. Outdated techniques like hair plugs are no longer considered viable alternatives to FUE.

Techniques like DHI and Sapphire blade FUE are variations of standard FUE, so these aren’t usually considered alternatives. But if you have a preference for a certain type of FUE, consider a surgeon who specializes in these methods.

Other non-surgical alternatives to FUE include PRP therapy, low level laser therapy, and medical therapies like minoxidil and finasteride. These options tend to be more successful in the early stages of hair loss, and can also be strong adjunctive hair transplant treatments.

Most FUE procedures are free from complications, but there are a few risks to be aware of beforehand. Like all surgeries, there’s a risk of infection, so seek medical attention if you develop a fever, worsening pain, or wounds that aren’t healing as expected.

FUE carries a slightly higher risk of graft damage for people with Afro hair textures compared with FUT. So Black or mixed race patients may be recommended to opt for FUT over FUE, though FUE is still possible in many cases.

FUE can leave small scars, but these aren’t usually visible. Even fades and cropped hair tend to hide any scarring from FUE.

Hair transplants are normally permanent, so should last a lifetime. It’s possible for your hair to thin slightly as you get older, but this is normal, and won’t resemble a fully receding hairline or balding crown.

You may experience continuing native hair loss, which can compromise the look of your hair transplant. Medical therapies like finasteride can often control native hair loss, though some patients opt for top-up hair transplants later to maintain their hair density.

When your grafts have grown and your hair has reached full density, most people will be unable to tell if you’ve had a hair transplant.

That said, there are visible signs for a few weeks immediately after surgery. When it’s safe to do so, you can wear a hat to conceal signs of your FUE procedure (normally around 10+ days afterwards). Alternatively, opting for unshaven FUE can help keep your hair transplant discreet.

Local anesthetic is used to numb your scalp completely during FUE. So aside from administration of the anesthetic, you shouldn’t feel any pain during the procedure itself.

Discomfort is possible after your procedure, when the anesthetic wears off. But most patients find they can manage the pain with acetaminophen.

The number of grafts needed depends on the amount of hair you’ve lost. Get an accurate estimate when you schedule a consultation with a Wimpole US advisor and surgeon.

The first signs of hair growth after FUE often appear after around 3 months. But it can take up to 12-18 months to see full and final density.

Theoretically, yes, but it depends on your donor graft availability. If your donor area has been fully harvested, you may not be able to have an FUE procedure after strip surgery.
