With more than 50 years’ experience, we’re now a world leader in FUE and FUT hair transplantation, and the six-time winner of the Hair Transplant Clinic of the Year award 2021 to 2026.
Our surgical team is led by Dr Michael May, a pioneer of the FUE and FUT techniques. These techniques are now used in hair transplantation across the US and worldwide. All Wimpole US surgeons are highly trained and experienced in performing FUE and/or FUT, ensuring full compliance and their ability to perform high quality hair transplants.

Our beginnings
A specialist heart clinic in London, 1975
The Wimpole Clinic’s roots start in London, where the clinic was established as a specialist heart clinic in 1975. The clinic was built on values of surgical precision, clinical governance, and long-term patient outcomes — and these tenets still guide our clinical practice today.
Dr May started at the clinic in 1981, when rudimentary hair plugs were still the dominant technique. Hair plugs have a distinctive unnatural look, leading to the need for method refinements. Dr May began exploring the strip surgery technique — FUT — which eventually became the industry standard.
FUT let surgeons implant much smaller follicular units, which regrew in more natural patterns than plugs. Dr May is renowned for his contribution to pioneering this technique. As our in-clinic expertise grew, the Wimpole Clinic began to attract referrals from other clinics, cultivating our reputation as the world’s leading hair restoration specialist.
Wimpole became a fully-fledged hair transplant clinic in the early 90s. More surgeons joined our team to accommodate our growing demand. Dr Mir Malkani, a senior Wimpole surgeon, helped facilitate our expansion into FUE surgery.

Dr May joins Wimpole
Hair plugs were still the dominant technique. Dr May joined Wimpole and started exploring strip surgery — FUT — as an alternative.
FUT takes over
FUT became the most refined technique, since individual grafts created more natural results than plugs. Referrals began arriving from other clinics.
A full-time transplant clinic
Wimpole became a fully-fledged hair transplant clinic, headquartered in London, England. More surgeons joined to meet growing demand.
FUE is introduced
The arrival of Dr Mir Malkani at Wimpole helped facilitate our expansion into FUE surgery — now the world’s top hair transplant method.
Wimpole’s US arrival
Wimpole opened its first clinic in New York, followed by Miami, bringing our experience and expertise to more patients around the world.

Our US arrival stateside
The Wimpole name has since become industry-known around the world. After seeing a surge of patients flying in from the US, we opened our first US clinic in New York in 2025, and welcomed US surgeon Dr Pawlinga to the Wimpole team. Dr Pawlinga is an ISHRS-registered surgeon with 18+ years’ experience in the field following extensive training in the US. We then established a location in Miami, cementing our stateside presence and helping hundreds of US patients achieve natural-looking, lasting hair restoration.
As we expand to reach more prospective patients in the US and internationally, we remain committed to those same core values of providing patient-centered care and achieving exceptional outcomes. More than 50 years after we started, we’re still here — and we continue to live by the same values our clinic was founded on. It’s why we’ve stood the test of time to become the world’s fourth longest-running hair transplant clinic.
