The procedure
What is a beard hair transplant?
Beard transplantation is a surgical procedure designed to fill out patchy or sparse beard hair. Using the most advanced hair transplant techniques, surgeons harvest follicles from a healthy donor area — usually the back of the scalp — and transplant them around the cheeks, jawline, and neck.
Beard transplants are performed using FUE or FUT. FUE involves removing each hair graft one by one. In FUT, your surgeon cuts a strip of skin from the donor area, which is then divided into individual grafts. The grafts are then implanted in the patchy areas of your beard, ready for future regrowth.
Full beard transplant results are normally visible a year after treatment. Early growth can often be seen much sooner.
FUE vs FUT for beard transplants
Both FUE and FUT are suitable for beard transplantation. Your preferred technique depends on your graft requirements, scarring tolerance, and hair type. FUE scarring is virtually invisible, even under short hair. FUT leaves a narrow scar in the donor area, which is hidden under longer hair.

Step by step
The beard transplant procedure
Beard transplant surgery takes less than a day. Find out what to expect on surgery day in this end-to-end rundown.
Step 1
Planning the procedure
Your surgeon will draw on your new beard line in agreement with you. They’ll confirm your graft count estimate, check your medical history, and talk you through the procedure.
Step 2
Preparing for surgery
You’ll then prepare for surgery: shave or trim your hair as agreed with your team, and receive local anesthetic to numb your scalp and face.
Step 3
Graft extraction
The extraction technique differs for FUE and FUT patients. In FUE, each graft is harvested individually. FUT involves removing a strip of skin, usually from the back of the head.
Step 4
Incisions & implantation
Small incisions are made in the patchy areas of your beard. Your surgical team carefully inserts each graft into the cuts so that they follow your natural beard growth pattern.
Step 5
Discharge & aftercare
Following your beard transplant you’ll be monitored in the clinic for around an hour. We then give you detailed aftercare instructions which will help with recovery and long-term regrowth.

John Rogers' Beard Transplant Review
"Absolutely incredible experience!
A hair transplant is something I've been thinking about for a long time now and finally going for it made me really nervous, however the level of care and most importantly understanding showed by Wimpole Clinic from my first consultation to my procedure was outstanding.
What was so lovely about Wimpole Clinic was that I felt like I was in safe hands, everything is well explained and any questions or concerns I had were handled in a professional manner, Marie in particular has been fantastic, she's been with me from the beginning advising me and answering any questions I may have had post surgery making this experience as comfortable as possible and keeping me calm when I've had my own concerns, I think she's been phenomenal and is still advising and helping me 4 weeks on.
I can't recommend Wimpole high enough, I think everyone there from the reception staff to the surgeons and consultants deserve the highest praise and I'm very grateful for everything they've done to help give me something that has improved my confidence in myself and my appearance."

Suitability
Am I a good candidate for a beard transplant?
If you have established beard hair loss, you could be a strong beard transplant candidate. Your consultant will match your donor density to the number of grafts you need to achieve your desired look. If you have enough donor grafts, no underlying skin conditions, and are in good overall health, you could be suitable for FUE or FUT beard restoration surgery.
- Stable and/or long-term beard hair loss or patchiness
- Enough donor density at the back and sides of the scalp
- In good overall health, with any skin conditions treated first
- Realistic expectations about coverage and timeline

Growth timeline
Your 12-month beard growth timeline
Full density after a beard transplant is normally visible from 12 months post-procedure. Here’s what to expect over the first year, from recovery to restoration.
Month 1
Initial recovery
The first few weeks after a beard transplant are important to your final results. Follow your aftercare advice carefully to protect the newly implanted grafts.
Month 2
Shock hair loss
There isn’t much visible change to your beard in month 2, aside from graft shedding. This starts after 2 to 4 weeks. It’s normal, and the hair will grow back.
Month 3
First signs of growth
Early signs of new beard growth start to appear. The hairs can initially be fine, light and unevenly distributed, so your beard may still look patchy at this point.
Months 4–11
Increased density
Growth becomes more noticeable during this period, with your beard graft hairs becoming longer, thicker and more defined. The shape of your transplanted beard gets clearer.
Months 12–18
Full results
The beard continues to mature. Thickness and coverage increase, creating a fuller, more natural appearance, with full density usually seen around now.

How long does a beard transplant last?
A beard transplant lasts a lifetime. While it may become slightly thinner as you get older, the bulk of your beard will remain intact permanently.
Is a beard transplant worth it?
Most beard transplant patients who choose to work with a reputable clinic agree that the results are worth the energy and expense. However, this is a personal consideration that varies from patient to patient. You’ll need to weigh up the pros and cons for getting a beard transplant and the potential impact on your life.
What are the risks of beard transplantation?
The risks of beard transplantation are similar to other minimally invasive procedures: infection is the most significant risk, though this is rare if your surgery is performed in a sterile environment by a highly trained surgical team, and if you follow your aftercare instructions closely. If you see signs of infection, such as fever and worsening pain, seek medical advice.
Other risks such as necrosis and nerve damage are much less common. FUT beard transplantation also carries a risk of visible scarring in the donor area.
Is FUE or FUT used for beard transplantation?
Both FUE and FUT can achieve great results for beard transplant patients. FUE is associated with a lower risk of scarring, while FUT may be preferable if you require a high number of grafts (3,000+) or have Afro-textured hair.
Does a beard transplant hurt?
The actual beard transplant procedure should be completely painless once the local anesthetic has been administered. Most patients say that injecting the anesthetic is the most uncomfortable part, and you may feel some pain for a few days after the anesthetic wears off. Any pain can normally be managed with acetaminophen.
Can I have a beard transplant if I’ve already had a hair transplant?
Yes, in many cases it’s possible to have a beard transplant in addition to a hair transplant. The main limitation is graft availability; if you have enough grafts to achieve your desired result, it may be possible to have both a beard and hair transplant.
What’s the recovery process like after a beard transplant?
You’ll need at least a week of downtime to recover after your beard transplant. Rest helps with healing, as well as minimizing the risk of physical damage or knocks to your face and scalp. During this time, you’ll probably experience side effects like swelling, oozing, and itchiness. These typically reduce within the first week.
You’ll also need to wash your beard and hair following specific clinical instructions. This promotes safe scab removal and reduces the risk of graft dislodgment. When all the scabs have come away safely, you can usually resume your normal activities. This typically happens 1-2 weeks after the procedure, but you can check in with your patient advisor to be on the safe side.
